ABOUT THE MANDING COLLECTION
Priscilla B. elegantly highlights Bògòlanfini or Bogolan fabric also known as “Mudcloth” in her premiere IVORY B. collection, The MANDING Collection. The collection is made of mudcloth and other materials like leather and cotton to exude a modern African sophistication. The MANDING Collection is named after the Manding or Mandingo Tribe, direct descendants of the Malian Empire of Mali, West Africa. The Manding people live primarily in Mali, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Guinea and other West African countries and are known for their beautiful tradition of designing Bògòlanfini or Bogolan fabric. Bogolanfini is a handmade Malian cotton fabric traditionally dyed using a process of fermented mud that dates back to the 12th century. In the Bambara language, the word Bògòlanfini is a composition of three words; Bogo, meaning “earth” or “mud,” Lan, meaning “with” and Fini, meaning “cloth.” The word directly translates as “Earth or Mud With Cloth” hence the fabric’s more common name, “Mud Cloth.” The MANDING Collection consists of four uniquely designed handbags of varying sizes from the Zoblazo bag, a dainty clutch purse, to the Bamako bag, a swank overnight bag.
ABOUT THE 3rd CULTURE FOUNDER
“It’s complicated”...
Born in Gabon (Africa), Priscilla A. BROU grew up in an Ivorian-Gabonese household in France. The family lived in the multicultural city of Sarcelles, Paris where Priscilla and her siblings were raised. This is where Priscilla met her husband Stephane Brou. The couple moved to the 17th Arrondissement of Paris and got married.
In 2014, they gave birth to their beautiful little boy, and one month later the family moved from Paris, France to settle in Brooklyn, NY. With her classic African European style, Priscilla B. was inspired by the impression her friends, associates and co-workers had of her unique upbringing and fashion sense. She was moved to showcase her culture as only she could, through the eyes of an African who grew up in Europe. She started out designing a clothing line that featured traditional West African Ankara fabrics but quickly decided that handbag design was where she could really express her eclectic life experience for an everyday life.
In 2018, IVORY B. was born; Ivory coming from her Ivorian heritage and B. from her married name, Brou. Priscilla B.’s mission is to source materials and produce the IVORY B. brand exclusively in Africa with the goal of platforming the chic and innovative artisans and culture that so often get overlooked in the fashion industry. IVORY B. is her way of spotlighting the visionaries and sophistication of Africa and giving back to a culture that gave so much to her and made her the woman she is today.
